random slug

gretzkyrh4 May 02, 2006 12:57 PM

My female corn laid 20 eggs for me about 5 weeks ago and has since resumed regular feeding and began to gain back weight. She has been healthy and showed no signs of any remaining eggs left insider, but yesterday when I went to clean cages and change water I found a single slug lying on top of her hide box. I know cases in other species where females who were not bred will randomly lay slugs, but has anyone else had their female drop a slug weeks after laying a clutch of fertile eggs? It just seemed odd to me, but I am relatively new to corns so let me know what you think.

Chris

These things happen. Keep in mind many feel it is more difficult for the female to pass a slug than an egg, as it must be hard to deliver a squishy soft egg as opposed to a firm mass. I had a King lay a small clutch of slugs, only 5 and she took at least 48 hours to push them out and crawled in and out of her nest box many times in between. Slugs often are either the first or last things to be delivered when a snake is laying. I have not heard many cases of them being in between good eggs. I would not be concerned about it, and congrats on the good eggs, Tom Stevens

My first corn layed a smaller funny colored one in between the other eggs. I have yet to throw it out because it has not collapsed, but I think it is a slug.

You know the topic of candeling eggs came up on another forum. Someone brought up the point....would you throw it away if you did not like what you saw when you candeled the egg? He went on to say [if I am not mistaken] he himself keeps most eggs no matter what they look like until they turn a few colors and start to smell....and I pretty much do this myself. I think it is smart to keep most eggs as many people can tell you sometimes perfect babies come out of some of those ugly eggs Tom Stevens

I agree. Although I have not hatched anything, as this is my first year, but I am not going to take that chance. I have a few eggs that are yellowish and look bad, but I will not take them out until they collapse and I am possitive they are gone. I lost one for sure. it collapsed. I cut it open and it just looked like (for lack of a better description) vomit inside. No embryo, just a thick funky colored smelly stuff. It had a really thick shell as well. I could tell even before I cut it open that the shell was thicker than the other eggs.

Congrats on your first clutch, I hope they all hatch for you. I have King eggs now but no Corn eggs yet. Should have my first in 2 weeks or less. Tom Stevens

Thank you.
My fist clutch (and the corn snakes') was 21 eggs. All kinda small. Looks like I might lose 8 or so. Fingers crossed that I don't. My other two had their first ever clutch as well. The other corn had 16 eggs that all look great, and are bigger than the other sorn's eggs. My cal king only layed 7 eggs but they are huge and look great.
Hope your snakes all clutch with no problems, as well.
