Black uromastyx

debb_luvs_uros May 02, 2006 02:48 PM

I have had a couple of people ask about the clutch of black eggs that were laid on Feb 7th so I thought I would give one update here.

The entire group (8) hatched out last week. Attached is a photo of this year's clutch shown with a uro from last year's clutch.

Congratulations on your babies, they are beautiful. Any tips for a successful incubation??? How long did they take to hatch? As I said in my first post about the eggs, the information is so varied as to temps, humidity and length of time for hatching. What type of incubator do you use? Best of luck with any future eggs.

I built my own incubator out of a freezer (only) unit several years ago. At 92F the eggs started hatching out on day 78.

Thanks, I will increase my temps as they were hovering around 89-90.

Pam

I have heard from several breeders that it is best to continue with the temperature started with rather than increase or decrease a temperature during incubation. These breeders had failures which they contributed to changing the temperature part of the way through incubation. I would strongly recommend leaving your temperature where it is at as there is nothing wrong with an 89-90 temperature. The best tip I can give about incubation is not to mess with anything during incubation unless you absolutely need to.

Hi Debb,

Thanks for the advice, I will let the temps alone and check on the eggs once a week. Is the humidity ok at around 90%? I used that with my monitor eggs and it worked fine, but I realize each species is different. I don't want to get too excited as I know the potential for failure is quite high, but all I can do is try to listen to those more experienced in this area and hope for the best. Thank you for your time and input, I appreciate it.
