I've got Jani eggs!

nodaksnakelover May 02, 2006 03:17 PM

Hello everyone!
My Northern Pines didn't do well for me this year. I'm not exactly sure what went wrong. Because I got a lot of infertile eggs. I only get seven good eggs and usually get twice that number. Anyhow, I also attempted to breed my Jani this year. But I presumed the male to be on the small side and he never acted interested. But I noticed the female was gravid, so I set up a nest box. And finally she laid for me. Seventeen eggs! A little mountain of eggs, all glued to each other in a mass. Now I just have to successfully incubate them. I'm worried about the three on the bottom of the mass getting squished or too much humidity down there as I'm sure the humidity at the bottom will be higher. Anyhow, I set them onto a layer of very slightly moist, more dry, vermiculite. Then put damp moss over the whole mass in the egg box I'm using. So we'll see how this goes. This is the first time I've bred this species and I'm very exited! Now the next two months and a half or so are going to be a tough wait! Here's the pic!

Congrats on a fine clutch. I often seperate the eggs, I know some people are afraid of trying this but I myself[knock on wood] have never had any problems. Once I did one egg and saw how they peel away I got to know how much pressure is enough, and also that sometimes they simply won't come apart. I'd try n get the 3 off the bottom if possible, but if not they may hatch out just as easily as the rest of the clutch. Good luck with them and all your eggs Tom Stevens

Congrats!........Since I know you have experience with incubating Northern Pine eggs, whatever works for you with your northerns will be just fine for jani. Do not worry about trying to separate the eggs. In fact, the ones on the bottom of the pile will probably be the first out. You should find out in 68-70 days. The eggs in the pic look good to me.
