My First Litter of the Year! Woo hoo!!!

JJsBoas May 02, 2006 03:44 PM

Hey all,

I don't post here much, but I read the forums fairly religiously on a daily basis as a study break for myself in between hitting the books. I was lucky enough to catch my 2000 hypo dropping her very first litter ever. She was bred by my big normal male. Nothing special going on with the litter, just your "average" hypos and normals. I was psyched about being able to see pretty much the entire birthing process. This is only the second litter of baby wigglies ever produced over here, and man I forgot how great of a feeling this was. It was pretty awesome seeing this big girl give birth. She was a champ. Seemed to take no more than 15-20 minutes to drop all the little ones.

Anyway, enough rambling. Here is a birthing shot and shot of the litter. No count as of yet, I just hope that everyone does ok. I did find that mom dropped a slug after I moved her into another cage. Enjoy the pics and good luck to the rest of you all this season.

Jay

P.S. I sure hope to God that this is a good sign that I'll kick some b@tt on my finals next week. Stressed out 1st year law student over here, ugh!!!

Thanks for the kind words. So far, they're all just sitting contently in their "goo." I don't really want to disturb them too much until they start moving around a bit more on their own. I took a whole lot of photos during the birth and I'll likely take a whole lot more once I separate them and they shed. Thanks again.

Congrads, and good luck on your test!

Thanks for wishing me luck on my finals. I'll likely need it. I'll tell you though, this is probably the best study break I've had all year!

No count yet. I'm going to let them sit in their "goo" for a while, probably until tonight, before I move them. However, when I saw their momma swell, the ovulation didn't seem all that large, so I only really expected around 15 babies. But I'm pretty sure there are quite a bit more than that. I'm thinking maybe 25 to possibly 30 lil ones.

Thanks again for the kind words.

I appreciate the kind words. The little guys were starting to crawl around when I left for school this afternoon. Can't wait to get home tonite to stare at them some more and to feed their poor mom. Man, she lost a whole lot of weight during gestation. I didn't feed her during her pregnancy and I just feel so bad for her. She's going to get a nice tasty rat tonight. I'll definitely have more pics to come.

The last female that I'm expecting babies from in August/Sept is a 2001 Anery 66% poss het snow that I got from you 5 years ago. I've waited a very long time for her to be ready to go. She's honestly one of my favorite snakes out of my whole crew, not only because she's my favorite morph (Anery), but she's always been a very calm girl to handle. My het Anery bred her, since my Albino didn't feel like cooperating in helping me prove her out to be Het for albino. Regardless, I just hope she remains healthy and does well.

Thanks for the well wishes...

Jay

26 babies, 1 slug and all the babies seem to have gone full term. No premies in this bunch from what I saw as I moved the babies to their holding box. Not quite sure what the hypo/normal breakdown is yet, as I was really concentrating on holding on to those slippery lil boogers when I moved them.

More background, momma gave me a bit of a headache because she never had a POS. I thought I caught her ovulation and counted 123 days from then, which made her due 4/23/06. But as that day came and went with no babies or parturition behavior from mom, I started to think the swelling I saw was only her Pre-Ov swell and so I had another week or so before she'd deliver. Sure enough, I caught her in the act this morning.

I just have to reiterate how awesome and nuts watching the birth was. I've never seen it in person before as this is only my 2nd litter. With my first litter, I just walked in the snake room in the morning and found a bunch of babies under the newspaper. I don't think I'll ever forget this litter, and I've got pics to help me remember if I do forget.

Anyway, thanks to you all again for all the kind words and well wishes. I swear I'll try to find more time to post here as it is very refreshing to be able to share these times with people who share your passion.

All the best to you all this season...

Jay
