Hi. My husband, sister-in-law and I were hiking in Joshua Tree this past weekend and came accross this snake. I was rather startled by it at first so I didn't get the best picture.

It looked like a young snake... about 4 feet long. Tan banded looking pattern. I didn't see a rattle and it didn't seem to have a triangluar head.

I know its a horrible picture but the snake was not being my best subject.

The snake is a "Red Racer" or Red Coachwhip (Masticophis flagellum piceus).
