Incubation temps for beardie/gecko eggs

sacredpurr May 02, 2006 04:25 PM

Hello All, My GG pastel female and GG orange male had 32 eggs last night. I have had many beardie eggs in the past but whats new is we are just starting to breed geckos, so this is my first time batch of gecko eggs out of three different females. I want female gecko babies so the temps should be low around 82 so what do I do with the beardie temps I need around 85? Should I buy another incubator tomorrow? Or can the beardie eggs hatch at that temp just take longer? I know a lot of you beardie breeders also breed geckos so please let me know what to do? If worse comes to worse I will just have male gecko babies this time since the gecko eggs have only been in the incubator since these dates 4/15 4/20 ad 4/29. Well the first one might be set at female according to Ron's book but Gecko breeding is new to me. I always incubate my beardie eggs at 85-86 degrees and I have never had a problem. Thanks in advance. Deb

I have always incubated at 80 to 82. The one time I let it get up over 85 for a week or so we had a couple curled tails. Never had that problem at the lower temps. Plus, the lower temps work well for my snakes too.

Rick, So the fluctuation in temp isn't too much?( 81-85 or so? Also Someone brought me over a Little Giant incubator to use, its new. I read somewhere that the temp in some incubators won't go below 90. Do you know if this is true with the Little Giant? Now I am worried. But I have two more gravid female beardies and more gravid geckos so I need another one. I plan to make a big incubator soon, as soon as hubby comes back from trucking. But for now I must make due. Thanks for your help. Deb Here are a few of my beardies:

I have only used the Hovibators and a custom made unit, so I cannot give you any advice with the Little Giant. Some fluctuation is not a big deal, if it was, nothing would ever survive in the wild. However, wild fluctuations in a short period of time will likely cause problems. Our temps normally fluctuate within a 2 degree range on any given day; starting out around 80 in the morning, going to about 82 in the afternoon, and then ending up back about 80 by morning. The cheaper the incubator, the more room temperature will effect the inside temps of the incubator. Remember, if the room temperature is over 80, nothing you do can get the incubator temperature below that; well you could, but it would take heroic efforts. There are times the temps will creep up but small adjustments keep this in check.

Plug it in and give it a try, I would never put eggs in an incubator that had not been running for a day or more to be sure it was stable. The eggs would be better off at room temperature for a day than in an incubator that got too hot.
