Less than desirable results

RussBates May 02, 2006 04:26 PM

Looks like the snake farming Gods are not smiling down upon me this summer. Two of the five clutches I'm expecting have turned out to be duds....a real bummer. It's looking like I might not get to test that long distance transfer of eggs if the slugs keep coming.

Maybe next year,
Russ

Sorry to hear about the slugs Russ. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the other three. How about double clutching?

BTW Russ, how many days between breeding and egg laying? I'm trying to record that with mine this year.

Chris,
Looking at my records the first breeding took place on 23MAR and again on the 28th of March (about 37-40 days). It's entirely possible that the colony mated several times with the two males I was using this year.

As for my bad luck I was/am way overdue. Actually couldn't have happened at a better time with my pending transfer. The only thing I can put my finger on that may have cuased the poor results are:
-Used a new male this time around (1st year breeder)
-Hibernation was not as cold and was shorten by two weeks

Other than that all breeding conditions were as normal.

Three clutches to go but definately I'm not double clutching this summer.

If my sonoran eggs turn out to be infertile, I've only got the hibernation issue to hang my hat on. On the positive side, VA gets pretty darn cold during the winter.

37-40 days is a little less than mine did last year. My thayeri that laid good eggs went 49 days last year. I had one that laid slugs and she went 41 days. My Cal kings went 52 days last year and all hatched.

I'm hoping for the best with my thayeri this year but not expecting great results. Three of my 4 males are 1st time breeders and 4 of my 5 females are 1st time also. That's why I bred most of my females with at least 2 males.

BTW you're right about Virginia. I spent 4 years there back in the 70's-80's. Virginia Beach doesn't get much snow, but it definately gets COLD. I remember their being lots of ice all winter long in Chesapeke Bay.
