Mortimer doesn't want to eat his veggies....

maggie* Jul 30, 2003 03:11 PM

Hi All!
Mortimer is now about 8 months old and is doing well. 4x2 enclosure, appropriate heat, lighting, humidity etc... The only problem now is that he is no longer eating his veggies. I leave birdseed in the terrarium and he is always picking at it, but ignores the fresh food. I'm giving him collard greens, endive, raddichio, sweet potato, zucchini, dandelions, hibiscus and nastursium flowers to little avail. He doesn't appear to be dehydrated and doesn't seem to be losing weight. Should I remove the seed? How can I make his salad irresistable?
Any advice appreciated,
Maggie.

the lettuce (collards, etc) you are offering him can actually be a bit tough on their digestive system. the best and healthiest bets for uros are turnip greens and mustard greens.

I'll second that! My two young Mali's have finally started eating turnip greens, but no others. I mix in vegies with the greens so they have to pick them out, and now they have decided the turnip greens are pretty good!

If you can get your hands on one of those red laser lights, you can wiggle the little red dot on the veggies, and he will eat the veggies thinking he is eating a bug! It works for my beardie, it'll prob work for uros too.
Hope this helps!

My mali Ra is 11 months old and he's going through a stage of skipping out on his fresh greens for iggy food. What I'm doing now is offering him the greens first and I won't give him his iggy food until he's eaten his greens first. It's taken a while but I think he knows now that he has to eat his veggies if he wants his "dessert"

Thanks so much for all of your kind advice. I'm from Toronto- where do you all find your turnip greens? (not a big fan of the turnip myself).
Maggie.

I'm from Brampton I haven't been able to find turnip or mustard greens around here either. Got some dandelion here though.
