dumb question about sperm plugs

riddick13 May 02, 2006 07:23 PM

I got another white oak rat a few days ago. The guy i got it from said its probably a female but was not sure. When i checked on it yesterday there were a few i guess you could say snot looking thing in the cage. I'm not very good at poping snakes yet but I tried and a white substance shot out of the vent. I got several other snakes but none are breeding yet and I'm not too sure what the substance was. It looked a little old and was slightly hard to the touch but still mushy.
I really hope this post makes sence and someone can identify what i'm asking about. Thanks for any replys.

The scent gland. You probably managed to squeeze out a substance that looks a bit like mayonaise, take a whiff! I'll bet it stinks. Sperm plugs are in the same location but are crispy looking things that hang out a bit if they have um.

I have read about sperm plugs in Thamnophis, but not in Elaphe obsoleta. Are you sure that American Rat Snakes form such things?

As far a popping goes, you only do this to rat snakes that just emerged from their eggs and not to snakes that are a few weeks old.
