turtles and veggies

greatkelleyp May 02, 2006 10:25 PM

I know that turtles don't start eating their veggies until their older but I'm wondering when I should start trying to feed them lettuce. I ask because the other day I saw Mr. T pull out one of his live plants and eat the entire thing but when I tried to offer him lettuce he wouldn't take it, I tried for a week with no success. Any advice about when to start giving the greens?

hi

i started feeding mine veggies when they were 5 months old. The female took right to it but my male took a bit more time. I say keep at it they will start when there ready. try putting 1 leaf in in the morning and leaving it for the day. it might work.

There is this common misconception that you do not attempt to feed greens to baby sliders. They can do eat greens as babies as too. They become more vegetarian as the get older but will always go for animal protein as well. Just offer some duckweed and keep the aquatic plants in the tank. You should keep trying to offer greens to them at every stage of their development and not just wait until they get older. They tend to fixate on the animal protein and are less likely to incorporate vegetable matter into their diet as adults if you don't.
