Leopard Geckos and bodies of water

ztous May 02, 2006 10:28 PM

I was interested in putting my leopard gecko into a tank that will have open water with fish and was wondering how the gecko would react to this. If the gecko is going to harm himself (drown) then I wil not take this step but if the worst that happens is he avoids the water then I think this will make a cool looking tank. Anyone with previous experience in this area that could help me out and give some adice would be greatly appreciated thank you.

Errm...Why would you want to do that...And what kind of fish...Dude...never mind, don't do it...

well they can not swim what so ever. im sure the gecko wouldnt voluntarily jump into the water, but if it were to get scared by something it will probably dart and then excidently run and fall into the water. this could happen when you are not home, the gecko could get startled by a cricket etc.. and fall into the water and then you wont be home to help the poor thing. it really is not a good idea at all.

Still...out of curisoty...Why...?

I wanted to do this simply for the fact that it would create a nice looking enviorment. I had thought that he may be able to swim so it didn;t seem like a bad idea but I'm not to sure if I chould continue now considering that they can't swim.

Even if they could swim, it still wouldn't be a good idea. To keep the substrate warm enough for the leo you would inturn turn the tank into a sauna. That much moisture in the air could and would cause a respitory infection in a leo.

I don't know about that...They actually do pretty good in an increased humidity enclosure. I'm not saying thay woulden't, really depends on how high the humidity level gets...And if you had a 40 gal long tank, and put it on the cool side, I don't think it would increase the humidity too much, especally since most of the time the top isn't covered... Still definatly not a good idea though.

Well thanks to your guidance I have decided not to expose my lizard to that dangerous of an enviorment since I like the little guy and want to keep him around for a while. Thanks for all your help I'm kind of new to leopards and needed a little help.
