polycarbonatesheet VS acrylic

TwoSnakes May 03, 2006 09:29 AM

Hi
Would like to know which of the two is better for holding heat? I imagine acrylic but wanted to ask both are 3/8 thick and going to be used for a door .
Neither has been ordered yet but place sells them cut . However have never seen polycarbonatesheet other than on sites thus not sure.

thanks

I think polycarbonate is better although some of the higher priced acrylics may match up pretty well.

I got the polycarbonate today which is bit less than 2 days after I ordered it which is amazing putting that aside its great crystal clear tough as nails.

The co sent it to me cut so no work thus thinking of getting another for a 36 inch long fish tank I have that uses glass cover which I break average once a year (I clean it monthly) and replace it .
My question is do you know if light penetrates same in 1/4 glass like 1/4 polycarbonate or acrylic ?
Its a planted tank . After getting this dont see the need for regular glass anymore for my tank cover but not sure of light penetration .

Thanks

Even regular glass varies in spectral transmission so it's hard to say. But I'm pretty sure polycarbonate has better light transmission characteristics than the typical glass used in aquaria and their covers.

But better is a tough term to pin down here. What's better in one application is not necessarily better in another. I know of one zoo who has a large dome built over an indoor rainforest. They have some panels designed to transmit UV light for certain animal species. They are strategically placed so these species can bask. Interestingly enough, the animals are more likely to bask underneath a panel that transmits UV than a panel which is not.

But the plants surround those areas tend to suffer burns and die off. So "better" is a relative term. In this case what is better for the animals is not necessarily better for the plants.

Okay gotcha I see what your saying . I am going to ask in a few plant type forums see if anyone uses this .
I might just buy it anyway give it a try this beats glass anyday .
Thanks
