Breeding and Bedding...

snowcornbabe May 03, 2006 11:42 AM

Ok, so I have two questions for anyone out there, first, I have a young, maybe close to 1 year old amel striped corn that I am believing may be a female, it's hard though, she is just a teenager... But, my neighbor and friend have an adult albino oketee male, they have had him for I belive close to 4 years now. But I was hoping to breed my female, if that's what she turns out to be... Anyway, what age/length would you say would be the best to introduce her to him?

Second Question: This is much smaller, but since she was a new born I have had her in aspen bedding, and let me tell you, she loves it! she'll bury in it if she feels like it, and everything, but I was hoping I might be able to wean her off of it, what would you say is the next best bedding? Could I just put down some sort of carpeting? She has a log she loves to bask on, but i do need to get a hide box. What do you think? again, she is close to a year old... about 2-3 feet long...

It is pretty easy to tell the gender of a corn at any age. You may want to take it to a pet store that specializes in reptiles or a herp show to find out the methods used for sexing snakes.

Corn snakes reach maturity based on size, not age. I don't put any of my females into breeding programs unless there are at least 36 inches long.

I think the best bedding is newspaper. Wood chip substrates often leave a layer of dust at the bottom of the enclosure. It would be pretty safe to speculate that the animal ends up inhaling this dust. Carpeting isn't that easy to keep clean and will most likely harbor bacteria.

Having said that, there are hobbyists who have been successful keeping and breeding snakes on a wide variety of substrates - so keep in mind that "newspaper being the best bedding" is simply one keeper's opinion.

OK. So that pick is real bad, but seriously she looks exaclty like the one you are holding. Now that I have read you r post........
Breeding is generally a role of three's.
3 years old, 300g, 30 inches (not taotally sure its 30, could be 36 like mentioned in other post). These are the criteria I have heard breeders use.

The bedding,
I have tried just about everything out there. It all has its ups and downs. Why change from aspen? I like it best so far. I tried the reptile carpet and really liked that at first. It looks really nice.....for a short time. But it shows every little "thing" that is on it. It is poor with odor control and takes time to clean and dry. I have too many pets to use it. Bark is bad for the respiratory tract. Paper towels wrok well, but are not asthetically pleasing. I only use the paper towels in my rack systems because they don't look as good. Good luck in what ever you choose, as it is definitely a personal choice.
