South Texas

stevenxowens792 May 03, 2006 12:02 PM

Dianna and I were in South Texas recently and we were about 5 miles or so from the supposed tornado (last week). We found only 1 snake that night. Why is South Texas so bad lately? What happened to 30 snakes a night?

Has the Freer Rattlesnake roundup been hurting the hunting as well. It is a very sad day when you don't even see an Atrox.

Thanks,

Steven Owens

You guys had bad timing. While it hasn't been a great spring there are some snakes moving.

There have been two recent rain events in portions of south Texas. Keep an eye on the weather maps so you know where it rained, when it rained, and how much it rained.

This past weekend the dry line pushed way east of San Antonio and we had high pressure and cool nights. That's not a typical 30 snake night in south Texas. I didn't look to see exactly what it was doing when you were there but I do know portions of Duval got between 1-2" of rain.

I believe it has recovered already and should be back to semi-normal this week, if you stick to areas that got at least a little rain and don't look like they are a matchstick away from being torched.

where do you check on something like the "dry line"? For that matter, I can't even seem to find rainfall totals from the past few days. Any idea what site to check that stuff?
Thanks

at least the first nine links on the top of the weather page work now. You can get any info you need from either those pages or the links right on those pages.

The Dew Points map on the weather channel page gives you dry line info. See where the dew points drop off sharply? Usually it is somewhere west of Del Rio, as it is now.
www.weather.com/maps/geography/southcentralus/southcentraluscurrentdewpoints_large.html

This map will tell you where the fronts are:

Those two maps combined with precip maps and forecast are almost all you need to know besides moon data.

Thanks, Joe!
Now, let's just see... Everyone will be out there for memorial day weekend, right? What the heck are the chances with this drought?
