My Female's gettin fatter..

lordmango May 03, 2006 12:16 PM

She's two years old and lives with a three year old male in a 75g tank. they both eat well and are always alert and wandering around. My question is about why my female would weigh 399 grams and my male only 349 grams. they used to be pretty close in weight (about two months ago) and I figured she's probably getting ready to have her second clutch sometime in the near future, her last one having been lain in september. Any other possibilities?

females can weigh more than males, its not unusual. but in this case since they are house together she is probably gravid. check her belly for little marble like lumps. keep checking her until you feel them. and if she is digging that is another sign.

They both seem to enjoy digging. A lot. I'll usually just pile up some sand for them to play in. There are definitly no eggs yet. her first clutch was 36 eggs so it was pretty noticable the week before she laid them. I forgot to put in the first post that her stomach hangs a good bit lower than the males. How long before they lay eggs do they start showing they're developing?

i usually notice the belly getting fatter about 2 weeks prior and the eggs being noticable within about a week of her laying. some may be able to tell earlier, but a week ahead for me. my female will eat ALOT of food for a few days, then stop eating a day or 2 before laying. she will constantly dig in her cage *that is when i had her in sand* id then move her to her laying bin.

I've also noticed that my male has stopped head bobbing for her as much as he used to. its probably been a good two weeks since he's done so and the last time I saw him doing this, she would bob back. When she bobs her head does this mean stay away or what does it mean?

females tend to do a slower head bob, its like a recessive head bob. its normal, they are almost saying ok, i understand, you are the dominant one. they are not telling them to stay away. ive never seen a female do anything to tell a male to stay away. ive heard of things but never seen it.

Thanks for all the help. I also have a three year old Male that I received from a friend who is seemingly healthy he's just small. He's probably two and a half inches shorter in overall length. any ideas? would he be ok to breed with the female I currently have?
