How much to feed?

badkittyamy May 03, 2006 01:24 PM

I have a question on ron tremper's site it syas to feed 4 food items to your leopard gecko each day. Grissom I don't believe is an adult yet (don't know his age, if anyone could guesstimate that too it would be helpful) Should I be feeding him large crickets 4 a day? The large crickets vary in size greatly every time I buy them they seem to be from as small as half th length of his head to the length of his head, he seems to be eating all the sizes fine.

Beautiful leo!!
As far as feeding him goes, I would not so much worry about how many you feed him. If he is hungry then by all means feed him. The size of crickets should be determined by the length from one side of his head to the other. So the space between the end of his mouth on the left to the right.
We only have 2 leos so the way i do it is get 5 or 6 and put them in the duster jar i have then just dump then in the cage a few at a time. This allows me to monitor how many he is eating and make sure that none of them get away or hide etc. If he eats all that i offer in a short amount of time i then go get him more. I do this for about 15 to 20 minutes and he either eats them all or he gets full and is done in which case i pull any uneaten crix out of his enclosure. He will usually eat 15 to 20 crix a feeding plus a few mealies or wax worms when they are offered then he is done. In other words feed him however many he will eat in a 15 minute period, I wouldnt judge from numbers.

I leave mealworms in a bowl in my leos cage 24/7. I don't free feed the crickets though. I let them eat as many as they want every night in a seperate tank. Just don't let them eat over 20 at a time.

I would agree with the rest of the people here, that you can go ahead and give him as much as he'll eat. Most animals will not eat if they aren't hungry. People tend to compare a lot of animals with dogs, cats, and people...and some types of lizards (monitors for example)...which tends to eat even when they're not hungry. They are call gorger; animals that will gorge if given the opportunities.
