selecting a panther

anafranil May 03, 2006 02:34 PM

Hi I am a step away ordering my second chameleon,a panther this time, first of all I have choise between 4 phases/morphs from this german breeder,Nosy be,pink ankaramy and another 2 that I know but can't recall right now.
I know it's a matter of preference mostly, but which would you go for and why?..
What I don't know is if they are captive bred or not,are these phases common enough so I should worry buying Wild caught ones?
I prefer going easy for a start...

I cannot give you ANY expertise or advice on this since I have my first panther (nosy be), but if I were to get another I think I would go for the pink ankaramy - they are truly gorgeous animals! So that is just my personal aesthetic preference

Almost all Ankaramies are WC, and imported, so I would try and stay away from all WC Panther's, considering this is your 1st one. Send an inquiry to the breeder asking which ones are CB and WC if you can. I do have to agree, Anks are gorgeous, but WC are so...errr...unpredictable, you really know nothing about them unless you can physically estimate their age.

Thanks you might have saved me from some trouble,so 'IF' I can't contact the dealer prior purchase which morph has the best chances of being captive bred?

why would you not be able to contact the breeder before purchasing? Isn't that a little risky?? Don't want you going thru what our friend alejandro recently went thru with the breeder he used.

Hey,

Ankaramies are by far the most beutiful panther in my opinion. Due to certain circumstances, my ankaramy days are unfortunetly coming to a halt. The females are very hard to get, and if you plan on breeding them in the future, I would stay away from them, unless you are willing to take a big risk. I have heard different stories from other people, but in my own experience all the wc ankaramies I have had, and seen in pics are all smaller, and skinnier. They just don't get that fat appearance on average. I know people are going to argue this with me, but that is just my own opinion.

Definetly go with a cb one if you have the choice. If they are all wc or all cb, I would go with anks though. Ambilobes are also very nice. Tamataves are awesome when fired up, but very dull when not (as are ankaramies). They are all breathtaking, it is just a matter of what you prefer, as you said in your original post. good luck, and let us know how everything goes!

-Adam.

just to answer lele's questions and perhaps someone elses I'll try to describe the situation here in Cyprus,Europe,so you gyes in USA appreciate what you have..
All reptiles over here were illegal for import until a year ago when a sudden trend in green iguana keeping started and forced petshops to try get a licence for at least that species.I was one of the first to buy and perhaps the last one standing, mine grew up to become a giant when everyone elses were literally crippled from MBD.Also you could see ten year olds having them at their shoulders and running..
I don't know why iguanas became so popular,in fact is one of the most problematic and difficult reptiles to keep if you don't have an enormous space to provide..
Anyway, some corn, king snakes, ball pythons,RT boas were found in the trade imported illegaly. The first legal imports were made from a friend of mine who was guided by me to import some leopard geckos and b.dragons.After that I had papers done and import my first veiled, and now I'm hooked..
I'll describe the rest of the story later cause I'm tired,I hope I answeared lele's question.
The conclusion is that if you want to have fun, sunshine,go to agia napa and dance till you drop or get drunk in the sandy beaches of the meditteranean then come to Cyprus,if you want to keep exotic animals,DONT.......
