What am I doing wrong??

rotcgirl84 May 03, 2006 07:55 PM

I bought an asian greenback frog from pet supermarket on 04/11. It only lived until 04/18... One week exactly. It was lethargic on the last day and then within minutes it ballooned up as much as it's little body could handle. It's jaw dropped down and tongue fell out as well. I got the frog the day it arrived at the store. The habitat was regulated at 75-78 during the day, 70-72 during the night... Humidity 60-80... Water bowl changed every day with dechlorinated water... misted daily too.

The store then ordered me a WTF and I recieved it on 4/25. It was in the same environment except the habitat was thoroughly cleaned and allowed to air dry and then rinced with water. The little guy was really active until this past Saturday, (4/29) when I discovered him lethargic as well and hemorraging on his legs. It seemed like red leg to me as the little guy looked like he was choking internally. I went back to the store and they told me to take him to the vet if he survived the night. Well, he didn't.

Now, they will not give me another frog unless I pay their cost on it. They have a 7 day guarentee on the frogs and even though they are breaking it they say it was my fault the frogs died because a few of the others that came with them lived. I have another Asian, a WTF, and 2 RETF that are all thriving and have been checked fully by a Vet. The Vet even said that she thought the frogs died of either complications from stress of shipping or it was something they had from before the store got the frogs. I sent a letter to the CEO of the company, just waiting on an answer. I just thought I would post this to see what other thoughts were and to warn.

If the store you went to is like the pet supermarket in St Louis, the care for reptiles and amphibians is poor to inadequate at best.

Find another source for your frogs if possible. I know around here it is very hard to find a local source for common pet frogs like White's.

Good luck!

i work at a petstore and i still have to agree with the last poster.. if you havent had luck with this one, find another source... its probably not the stores fault.. but if thier vendor is anything like ours, the animals are in poor condition when they come into the store... i refuse to order anything more complicated than a green treefrog or firebelly toad from our distributor because they are generally wild caught, kept in deplorable conditions prior to showing up, and in all honestly, probably arent kept in the correct conditions at the store either.. as a lowly employee, i am not allowed to set up the best possible habitat for the animals, just something good enough for them to live in until they get sold..

i am a frog enthusiast, and i never buy from petstores.. try a reptile show or online dealer... ive never bought them online, but ive had good luck with the ones from shows providing that they are vet checked and quaranteened after i take them home..

good luck...

i also am a lowly employee at a crappy petstore and they are right. it sucks. i would wig out on them if it was within the warranty period.
animals from petstores in general arent in good health like he said. especially the chains, they are more of a dogfood distributor than a petstore, and their animals are a reflection. anyway sorry about your frogs, doesnt sound like your doing anything wrong.

The letter to the CEO got some attention... The vendors told the managers that I was lucky the frogs lasted that long with what they died of. They gave me the last two frogs they had (a WTF and an Asian) and I took them straight to the vet. They are getting dewormed and I got some antibiotics for some cuts they have. (the Asian's nose is rubbed raw and the WTF's mouth has a little cut) They are wild caught and the vendor said they don't deworm. Which would account for the worms I found. I lent the store manager some books I have on the frogs so that he could educate himself better. They kept 4 frogs in a terrarium a little bigger than a 2.5 gallon. It's funny... I started out with 2 frogs and now I have 6.... I promised I would stop at 4....

How do you keep your clowns and how lomg have you had them ? I find some incredible looking . I think there are African and Amazon clowns ? Not sure but have seen some amazing looking and some not bad but nothing like the others . I read in a post not easy to keep can be delicate temp wise .
What type set up do you keep yours in ? I am thinking of some as herp show like a month away no one in area carries them and to hot now to order through fedex plus I imagine dont ship well.
I keep Cubans-and greens but as you know great frogs but easy so not sure about the clowns .
Thanks
