Aaah! Insects in the tank!

themightypapaya May 03, 2006 11:20 PM

I have a hous gecko which has been apparently healthy and happy in his current home since January. In his tank I use coconut substrate. The tank contains live, nursery-bought plants, and also has stick from an unknown outside source, which had been indoors for at least half a year before being placed in the tank.
Recently, I have found some sort of arthropods within the soil in moist areas. They are about as long as a period and thin. they appear to be shiny or white, but at that size, I can't tell much about them. I was wondering if I should worry about these guys, or assume they came in whith the plants, and are just harmless soil-dwelling bugs. I can barely see them, so I can't really identify them-- I can't even tell if they are arachnids or insects. The only other bugs in the tank are the occasional fruitflies, and the prey, of course.

I havents seen any mites or ticks on my lizard, but if he is suffering silently, I want to know.

Bugs are great and are a sign of a healthy, natural vivaria. There is a tenfold greater amount of bugs that are harmless as opposed to harmfull. I wouldn't worry at all. Appetite will be the first thing to go if by chance your gecko is getting sick. Also (and a bit hard due to the flighty nature of these guys), weight records can be handy to monitor trends.

Have fun!

Ian
