Ant collecting........

Ryan-reptilian May 04, 2006 02:34 AM

Two of my most convenient ant collecting spots are in planning stages for developement so I have been searching out new spots lately. About two weeks ago I found an undeveloped area about 10 minutes from my house with more p.californicus than I have ever seen in an area. I thought it would be a great spot to support a large population of Coast and Desert horned lizards. So far I've been back there twice (today being my second), and today I saw two CHL's . A sub-adult female and a juvenile male. I usually have a camera with me, but forgot it today (of course). The male had beautiful orange markings on it's back, typical of DHL's around here, but I've never come across anything other than grayish CHL's in my area. It's stomach was almostly completely pure white with very few markings. I will go back and get some photo's soon. Has anybody else seen any HL activity lately?

Hi Ryan, you have DHL and CHL's overlapping in your area? that's cool, I have CHL's in lots of areas aroud here (L.A area)and only found DHL's by the salton sea, and with gas the way it is, unless I have business out that way, looks like the trips are going to far and few between. I was told that the Blythe and Neddles areas are loaded with DHL's and I was going to make a trip or two out there but I'm not so interested with gas at $3.50 I guess I will have to find some closer and less proliffic

I do live in an overlapping area as far as DHL and CHL's are concerned, but CHL's out number the DHL's by far in my area. You could shave about 3 hours off your drive time if you really want to see DHL's. You don't have to go all the way out to Needles, Blythe, or the Salton Sea. You could try the high desert area or even western Riverside county. I know what you mean about gas prices! I try to get out a couple times a week to herp and usually about 150 to 300 miles one or two additional nights a week road cruising for snakes, so I definately feel this BS gas price rise in my pocket book. Here is a link to help find the cheapest gas possible in your area. Just type in your zip code in the appropriate box and it will list the 20 cheapest gas stations in your area.

Where abouts in the LA area are you from? You may be closer to DHL habitat than you think.
