Is it too late to breed GBKs?

colubrids May 04, 2006 10:30 AM

I got my hands on a pair beautiful gray banded adults just recently. Is it too late to put them together and breed them? They are both experience their second post brumation shed phase right now? So I had thought I would put them together after they both finish their shed cycles. She appears to be ovulating but I am not for sure. I would love to have them succesfully breed this year though!

Any advice is welcome. I am just learning about graybands in particular and not sure if they are late ovulators or early breeders by normal standards.

Thanks

I still have a couple of cal kings that are getting ready for their first introduction (one just shed yesterday). Put them together.

Although I have had mine together for weeks, I noticed them locked up again last night, so I say give it a try...

Well I know it only truly matters whether or not the female is still "open" to the idea of it, so I shall just hope that she is as soon as their sheds are done.My other breeders have mated and are already gravid so I wasnt sure if I still had a window of time left with the graybands. Thanks for the info and advice.

The obvious answer to me is when did they come out of brumation. You said you just picked them up right?? So did the seller brumate them and then sell them after they came out? Did he not brumate them at all?? Your snakes have nothing to do with this pair if they had different conditions.

For instance there are many breeders who already have eggs, some have had hatchlings, and other like myself are still waiting on eggs and breedings. It is a matter of when the start of the year was for the snakes.

So yeah put them together and see what happens but don't judge them by snakes that have had different conditions. The comparision won't hold up.

You make a darn good point there. Silly me for not seeing things that way.

have been out of brumation since late Feb. My male has been more than willing and had already hooked up twice with a first time female. My older larger female just shed for the 2nd time the day before yesterday. Last night she finally let my male hook up.

Put them together, if they wanna breed they'll figure out a way.
