i live in south west colorado, soon to be back in vermont though. but i have heard that you have to be very careful when not being a resident and herping AZ, i have been told that you must buy a fishinggame license, or chances are you will get a hefty ticket, i have heard of people stopping to look at something and getting fined for it, now i dont know how much validity there is to those stories but i thought i would share what i have HEARD.

Mountain Kings can be found in most of the wooded canyons of the mountains in central and southeastern AZ. You just need to get out in the morning and hike around looking for them. They are After rain is good, but they come out when it hasn't rained as well.

They aren't rare, but you just have to put in the legwork. They are generally found out crawling around around big rockpiles, streambeds, even climbing up the trunks of trees.

Get out there, look, and you should eventually find them. Canyons that have water flowing are probably better than dry canyons, but they aren't down in the canyon bottoms.

If you really want to know, get Brian Hubb's book "Mountain Kings". It is the best reference for where and how to find pyros and zonata. It is available at herp expos or online at mountainkingsnake dot com.

I lived in the Prescott area from 93-2000. I herped AZ quite a bit. Pyros are tough to find. I found some on the roads mostly right at dusk. Start close to home in canyons and mountain areas. Water is a key too. You might even find some secluded spots with boards or tin. Check those often.

Thanks for the info. I live in Glendale, AZ. I have been going up to Prescott though looking for them. I haven't found one yet. I have just heard stories. I heard that Oak Creek Canyon is a good place for pyros. Have you heard of this?????

Yes Oak creek canyon is very good. It's better towards the Flagstaff side. Also Jacks Creek and Beaver creek. I would spend some serious time evening and nighttime just cruising neighborhood roads around Prescott outskirts especially in areas with granite outcroppings. Try areas near water.
