Bufo Alvarius

fueledfourteen May 04, 2006 11:10 PM

Does anybody know where I can get a Bufo Alvarius and how much it costs? Or (and I don't know if it is endangered or not) is there anywhere I can find them wild? I live in the Long Beach, CA area.

They've been aquired at larger pet stores in some areas. Sometime larger chain pet stores can order in specific species too. Have you checked with your local sources?

I checked with the better reptile store in the area, but it's not a chain store. I'll try going to PetCo and see what they say though, but I have a feeling it might be pricey there. Any other suggestions?

sonoran desert/colorado river toads (bufo alvarius) are endangered. so it's likely collecting them from the wild without a permit is illegal.
The only one's i've seen for sale have been through the kingsnake classifieds going for $80 to $150 per toad.

I don't know where to look it up, but I was told that collecting them from the wild is illegal in the state of Arizona, but not any other state.

The strange thing about endangered toads is that yes for the most part collecting them out of the wild isn't helping them thrive in the wild, yet if some people don't have them and get them to breed in captivity, the neverending human development is just going to completely whipe them out.. not to mention all the pesticides, mole-killers and whatever else that we're using which are killing frogs and toads all over.

So don't do anything illegal of course, but if you're serious and sincere about trying to make toads happy and perhaps even breed in captivity, it's worth a try.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it is illegal to keep bufo alvarius in the state of California. Their range extends into part of southern CA, and those populations may or may not already be extinct. The only place it is legal to collect these toads is in AZ. They can be kept anywhere but CA and possibly NM (not sure about legal status).

I guess I had it backwards, someone from AZ once told me it was illegal to collect them there.

I live on the other side of the country and have some b.alvarius go figure.
