Latest pictures/freakedout/number ?

Hey all,
CHarlie just shed and his colors underneath are great. I have some pictures, but ill get some better ones when i can get him outside for a sunbath. Also, the other day i decided to mist him with water that was really hot and he didnt freak out like he normally did when his cage is misted. Dumb*&^^* me forgot that water cools very quickly in the air. So water that is HOT in the mister will be just right as mist.... duh....(smacks himself).

One of the pictures is my setup. The difference between this and my last setup picture is that i mirrored everything. The wicker camabinet right there used to be right next to the basking spot, but i switched it to see if he would be happier. So far i dont know. I still think he is trying to get used to it. He is still eating just fine, and i havnt noticed any other unusal behavior, but ill keep you updated.

Question. I see everyone using this decimal system for their pets (ie 1.1 or .1) What is that?

and now... the floor show. Charlie, your on. Yes your on now. WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOUR NOT DRESSED? YOU DONT EVEN WEAR ANY CLOTHES! YOU ALWAYS DO THIS TO ME!?!?!?

Jeff-charlie's colors are coming on nicely. he's a really beatiful and mellow little man. the numbers are the numbers of females and males and unknowns/youngsters. But-LOL-I can't remeber in what order. I think it's F/M/Y. Someone asked a coupled of posts down but I forgot the answer already. (50 year old brain-darn thing doesn't work like it used to) Diane

Its ok, i was just wondering. Oh, i have found one food charlie doesnt like. He doesnt like phoenix worms. He will eat everything else on the planet right out of my hand, but he wont eat the phoenix worms out of my hand, a dish, or a tray. Oh well, im not all that worried about it.

ill try to take him outside this weekend and grab some pics.

Let the worms morph into flys, then see if he likes them.

You asked..."Question. I see everyone using this decimal system for their pets (ie 1.1 or .1) What is that?"...the first (left) number is the number of males you have, the middle number is the number of females you have, the (right) third number is the number that you have that you haven't been able to sex. If there are only two numbers, then its still male (left) and female (right).

Yeah, im kinda trying that now. Should i just let them sit and they will pupate on their own? I am also trying to turn some waxworms into moths for breeding, but i will probobly end up feeding those to him as well.

Besides, wathcing him hunt down a flying insect sounds like fun.

Thanks,
Jeff

I always found silkworms easier to let morph to moth phase, but silkmoths dont even fly. The wax worms usually died before that happened. Besides, aren't they sprayed like Butterworms are to prenvent morphing and then breeding?

The pheonix worms, will just morph on their own after time. But only the largest size. They don't grow either, so unless you have the largest size, don't bother.

You said..."The wax worms usually died before that happened. Besides, aren't they sprayed like Butterworms are to prenvent morphing and then breeding?"....I've had waxworms go through the whole cycle.

The problem is keeping the tiny hatched worms INSIDE a container. If you use a jar with a lid the tiny worms will die (too humid). If you use screen over the lid, the tiny worms can get through the holes. If you use a cloth, they can/will eat through it. The worms don't/can't infest your house if they escape because they dry out...but then you have all these little worms stuck to whatever surface the die on to scrape off!

Waxworms can be tricky - gutloaded(vs. empty, just bought worms)
are VERY nutritious, but they are just TOO high in fat. For sickly,
growing, acclimating chameleons, they're good - but the speed at which
a healthy adutl chameleon will pack on weigh after eating these things is
remarkable.

I bred them for a while, with mixed results. You have to get their food
mixed right - too wet and sticky, and they die, too dry, and they won't
eat it.

then, they pupate and mature and lay eggs - no problem...

Where I ran into a dilemma is raising up my baby worms. I had noticed
they ate fast - I had dozens and DOZENS of moths, each laying lots of
eggs. And I threw some food in. they grew. I threw some more food
in -extra - as I was going away for a long weekend. Not enough food,
apparantly.

The little worms are able to get through almost ANYTHING. The key
is to keep them happy, and well fed. IF that's taken care of, they're
usually stay put. When there are so many larvae, that the food yo uput
in gets eaten up in no time... then they start looking for food. Being
that they're small, they're able to get anywhere - even through screen.
If they're NOT hatchlings, they'll be robust enough to live long enough
to get pretty far - like, for instance, covering all the walls of the closet
you use to raise insects in, or filling up your microscope storage box,
and chewing tunnels through the foam that holds the instrument in place.
They left little bits of chewed foam rubber all over the box -it was
disgusting.

And that's not the worst part. VERY tiny worms dry out an ddie.
soewhat tiny worms don't. They move around, and whe they don't find
food, they cut their losses and pupate. Whic results in, yup - tiny
moths, all ove ryour house, and a very irate spouse.

Breed roaches.

Yeah, i think i got the largest size.

For the waxworms i took a large piece of tupperware and filled the bottom with about an inch and a half of honey mixed with matza. I than added some fan folded pieces of paper towels and stuck the whole thing in a dark room temperature spot. I hope this works.

Charlie is a beautiful veiled. I especially like his crest. So aerodynamic... looks like he could move real fast!
