I feed my small monitors on roaches and pinkie mice. They seem to show a clear preference for roaches over crickets. I reckon that it remains to be seen if that diet produces results comparable to a diet of crickets.

most lizards LOVE roaches, while being only mildly interested in crickets. Lobsters are easy to breed, and don't smell.

if you want a small self sustaining Roach colony, start with at least 500. you can do a couple of thousand roaches EASY in a setup as simple as the one pictured. don't forget the bug stop, as they CAN climb most surfaces, including glass : )
