I am Confused, can you help me out?

SNAKEHIPS May 05, 2006 09:18 AM

I had a female cornsmake delivered today, the dealer said she was a year and a half in age, she is HUGE, at least 2 and a half feet long and and an inch and a half thick, I was rather surprized.I have another cornsnake that is about 15 inches long and i assume is a yearling as the dealer said that. I am confused because i am not sure how old my snakes are and how big they should be 'typically' saying for corn snakes.

She is a very beautiful snake, i did not realize she would be so big!

thanks
P

I have an 8 month old corn that's pushing 30 inches and is at least as thick as my thumb.

Depends on how much they eat and their specific genotype.

wow what a beauty! very good looking snake, only 8 months old? how do you know that? did you get him/her as a hatchling? I guess you are right, genetics and diet do play an important role! thanks for your feedback and pic!

Thanks for the compliment.

She's been a trooper. Got stuck to duct tape the first day I had her and I thought she was either going to die, or fear me for the rest of her life after the 3 hours I spent getting it off with olive oil. A couple of weeks of neosporin treatment on the wound and 8 months later and she has no scars and comes out to see me when I'm bumping about the room.

Here's a picture of her a month after I got her at 14 inches. She was born in late August '05 at a little under 12 inches. Compare that to the current photo in the previous post. Both in the same box, her feeding box.

Good luck with your little buddies.

the answer to this is kinda a vague one in my opinion. Corn snake growth has a few factors. First, is the corn snake's genetics. Some corns grow faster than others even if on the same feeding regiment. Another factor is the feeding regiment. Some people power feed their snakes. This causes the snake to grow much faster. There is also a big difference in 6 months of snake growth. Say the big one that you got was an early 05 hatchling, and the smaller one was a real late 05 hatchling. It could matter a lot. I have 05 hatchlings that about 19 inches and then I have bought left over 05 hatchlings that were problems feeders and they are like 12 inches. It is entirely possible that 6 months made that big of a difference.
I am by far, not an expert though. Good luck
