It gets even better in the next couple of years as I start to breed back a lot of double het combos. Rolling dice on the stats (1/16) that will show 2 traits at one time. Something new in the Cal King industry.

Not doing Daytona, just the Tucson Reptile Show in beautiful Arizona.

How do those double het for albino & hypermelanism come out? Aren't those traits the exact opposites of each other? A lack of melanin and an excess of melanin? Curious Greg

Kerby... May 05, 2006 08:08 PM

just like in the Cornsnake world when they first bred an amel to an anery and 1/16 was a Snow. So when getting a cal king to show 2 traits (albino and whatever else) at one time, I would assume that the outcome would be an albino with the other recessive affect as well. In Cornsnakes the Snow is an Albino Anery, red eyes and all, just no red (anery).

The problem with cal kings is low clutch size compared to cornsnakes. So getting that 1/16 is a little tougher.

This year I am breeding my double hets (albino & lavender), three clutches. So what will a cal king that is both lavender and albino at the same time look like?

This year I am also breeding my double hets (albino & hypermelanism - Mendota) again. Last year I got albinos but no hypermelanistics (Mendotas) out of the small clutch. This year I am breeding that pair again plus I am breeding my Chocolate Banana to a double het (albino & hypermelanistic) for a few reasons.

I also have future breeders that are double hets:
Lavender & Blizzard
Ghost & Hypermelanistic (Mendota)
Albino & Ghost
Lavender & Hypermelanistic (Mendota)

I also have Davis (hypermelanistics) Cal Kings that were too small to breed this year. I want to breed them to my Mendotas to see if it is the same gene, I believe it is.

This year I used a "Lavender", more like a hypo that came from Great Valley Serpentarium. There are a lot of hypomelanisms that aren't compatible out there.

I also have young Blue-Eyed Blondes that will go into the mix in the future.

THANK GOD FOR MATRIX SHEETS! lol

**just like in the Cornsnake world when they first bred an amel to an anery and 1/16 was a Snow**

What I meant is: When you breed an amel to an anery you will get normal looking that are double hets. When bred back to each other, that is where the 1/16 will show both traits at the same time. Getting a Snow.

And here I thought you were going to slow down a bit with your Cal Kings. LOL Hope you have a good season this year Kerby. How's everything in CV? Do you still have that melanistic thayeri???

I don't have near the number of snakes that I used to have. Of course I can see that if I keep everything that I produce for special projects, then I will run out of room soon!!! Ya know, like when we bought Bob's collection in 1998.

I did get rid of my rattlesnakes though. My girlfriend was happy about that.

I got rid of my thayeri a couple of years ago. I can't even remember who I sold them to. The black thayeri was part of that group. I got my thayeri from Rich Gassaway. I don't believe he has any more either. But his rattlesnake collection is awesome.

Grant is finishing his first year at the U of A and Brandon is about done with his sophomore year of HS.

The Western Regional Taxidermy competition is next month in PHX. I will be competing in the reptile reproduction category instead of reptile skin mounts.

And like every year.............I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE EGGS TO HATCH!!!

p.s. Chris, your thayeri are looking nice!

Ya but slowing down from 150MPH to 145MPH is just a technicality. LOL I wasn't aware of you having a rattlesnake collection. I knew you kept a couple but.....????. I knew Rich had a good size collection. He's got a buch of goodies.

BTW speaking of goodies your Cal king projects are dizzying to me. I finally decided that I was going to give up on Cal kings. I sold all of them. You are the king of Cal kings. They should change the name to Lonesome Valley kings And such humble beginnings.

Glad to hear the kids are doing well. Good luck with that Taxidermist competition. Are you doing another albino Gila Monster? LOL

Thanks for the kind words on my thayeri. The next couple of years ought to be interesting.

I was looking through your misc. photos section on your website and I noticed the pics of the albino gila monster. What is the story on that animal. It looks exactly as I would picture one to look, absolutely amazing. Are there any albinos in captivity?

Kerby... May 06, 2006 12:57 AM

That gila is a reproduction. I painted it as an "albino" in 2000 as a practical joke on the Field Collecting Forum.

AZ G&F did have a hypo gila at the Tucson Reptile Show last year.
