Safe to take outside?

beowulf May 05, 2006 02:23 PM

I just have a question on taking my albino burm into the yard. Is it safe? Does the albinoism affect him at all? I doubt it will pick up any parasites, right? Thanks to anyone that replies!

It isn't likely that he would pick up parasites unless he was outdoors for an extended period of time.

What I would advise first off is to keep him out of any direct sun. Their eyes don't have the pigment in their pupils that protect their eyes from potentially harmful UV radiation. Plus, bright light really tends to bother them. Anyone that keeps their albinos under bright lights may wonder why they always burrow their heads under their body folds. This is why.

If you do take him outside don't be out of contact with him for too long. Pythons tend to revert to full instinct and to become on guard when suddenly outside and if he forgets about you he may mistake you for a potential predator and go nuts on you. Be careful.

Best of luck.

I have a normal and take him outside often. I find he always moved toward the shade in my flower beds and under the ground cover. On a few occasions I kind of left him alone and just watched him be a snake. When I went to pick him up he turned, quite quickly, at me. I now use a hook and when I approach, do so very gently and touch his tail before proceeding further. If he does nothing, then I try to pick him up but always from behind.

Hey, I read one of your post mentioning you are in the military. What branch? Luckily, I'm on shore duty now so I can begin my collection. I can't wait for Homer, my burm, to get big and fat! Bummer about your snakes sometimes being a hassle. At least you don't have to walk them! Craps like a dog though...

I'm in the Air Force. I'm in the security forces and am retirement eligeable on September 10th of this year. Not sure what I'm going to do though.
