Funky Urates

nerthin May 05, 2006 02:53 PM

Hello!
I bought a 1.0 columbian red tail about 5 feet. He is in good health and eats every feeding. He has had normal fecal matter however, his last excretion was just urates. On the outside of one of the clumps there was a yellow substance that was gritty. It actually seemed like there was little cystals in it. I have his temperatures at 90-95 on the warm side and 75-80 on the cool side. I also have his humidity right at around 40-50%. I am currently keeping him in a home made 6'x2'x2' cage. I am using aspen bedding for his substrate. I feed him large f/t rats every sunday. I bought a 0.1 surinam female from the same breeder and these snakes were caged together. So I am just wondering if it could be parasites or just calcifications in the urates. Thanks for taking time to read!

My guess is that you are seeing bile salts. They are sometimes brown and sometimes green. I've sometimes seen that sort of thing with my boas' urates, but usually they are mixed in the droppings so you don't see them. As far as I know, they are nothing to worry about.

Ok thank you very much! I thought it might have been some kind of mineral but I did just get this snake and I havent had a chance to take him or his fecal matter to a rep vet. Thanks again!
