Feeding regimen for rainbows?

chaoscat May 05, 2006 05:20 PM

There's been some talk in the python forum about feeding twice a month or less for some species of python. Has anyone noticed if brbs should be fed less than once a week, or is one prey item a week good?

as to feeding, I have lots of BRB's and they have different feeding regimens:

Hatchling to about 1 year old - fed weekly

Yearlings to breedable adults - fed every other week

My breeders only reliably eat for about 4 to 6 months so are on a special regimen

Adult breeder Males - fed every other week between breeding seasons, ends around May/June, starts back up in February
The males will start eating when they are ready, can take longer if a female is still giving off pheromones.

Adult breeder females - fed wqeekly post parturition before next breeding season begins. Parturition around August plus/minus a month (sometimes even later) next breeding season starts the following February. They will just stop eating all of a sudden.

Once breeding season starts, I offer both males and females smaller prey and is mostly turned down. Last week out of 2.7 offerred food, only 0.1 took a small rat. The others said "nope...no way....not hungry....not gonna eat that"
