Opinions Please!!!

mkco79 May 05, 2006 07:41 PM

######Hi, I was wondering what the average size/weight for a ball python is when she is one year old. Mine is 18 inches and roughly 3 pounds in weight. I am wondering if she is underweight and if I should feed her more?

Right now I am feeding her one fuzzy once a week.#####

Wanted to get a few more opinions on this!!?

If you go down the forum to the post by JM about being bitten, you can find a link to her website. On that site, she has some good data about ages and weights of some pythons that she raised from hatchlings through about 29 months. (I think she has more data but hasn't posted it yet.) That data will give you a good idea about age versus weight. I'm working on a long post where I give her data and some other data a more rigorous statistical treatment. I'm several weeks at least from being ready to post it.

Most people use grams for snake weights. I think 3 pounds and 18 inches sounds very fat.

It's not how many snakes you have. It's how happy and healthy you can keep them.

My dumeril's is 5 feet long and just barely 3 lbs! I think you should use a gram scale instead of a human type scale. Three pounds is roughly 1300 grams which would be a breeding sized female....def. would be the fattest 18 inch ball python on the block! Here are some reference pics:
Pic One: 5 lb , 2400g gravid female

Pic Two: 2 lb, 900 g yearling female

Pic Three: 1 lb, 400 g yearling female

I have a year old female ball who is 900 grams, and a three year old female who is 950. Size depends on the snake! I have several that will not refuse a meal, others that go off feed for several months, and some that just are "small" for their age
Good Luck!
