A couple inquiries including legalities.

Lucien May 05, 2006 07:51 PM

I'm not actually new to wanting to possess an Indigo snake but I have never actually had one in my care due to the uncertainties of availability and legality where I live. Currently, I live in Vermont and I was wondering what species/subspecies of Indigo are legal here to own and obtain and also where best it would be to obtain whichever specimen this may be. As you see, I already have experience with large snakes but I've always loved indigos and have been considering for some time trying to acquire one. I'd also like to see approximate price ranges for various subspecies of these snakes if possible? If discussing these things through email is easier, please feel free to email me with the information by utilizing the link under my name. I'd really appreciate any help in this matter especially with the legalities of owning one of these snakes since I know the Eastern Indigos are endangered and so are most of the others in one way or another.

Thanks for any help

Can anyone give any insight here? I'm looking for the true North American Indigos.. any of the subspecies and what the legalities of each are to being able to obtain and keep one in Vermont. I tried to find the info once a while back and was told conflicting stories so...I'm trying here and I'd really some input from someone...

Lucien,

I am not sure what your local regulations are, regarding the keeping of non-native endangered species, so you will have to do your homework in that area. You will need to check with your state wildlife regulatory agency to this regard, as some states require permits to keep non-native endangered species. Now, if you can find an Eastern indigo in Vermont, you will not require interstate commerce permits. However, should you purchase an Eastern indigo from someone outside of your state of residence; you will be required to acquire a USF&W interstate commerce permit, prior to such an acquisition.
You will not require permits for any other species of Drymarchon, as eastern indigos are the only member of the genus protected at the federal level.
Should you need further information regarding permits and who to contact for such, go to www.indigsnakes.com and review the information listed under the "permits" tab...

Best regards,

Jeff

Thank you very much. I'm grateful for any help whatsoever at this point. I have a lot of homework to do but when I inquired a few years ago with the local fish and wildlife they responded with a resounding "No way possible to own on a hobbyist level" but then again, half the F&W officers here don't know what they're talking about. I do have one person who might know what the laws are regarding Eastern Indigos here in VT but I'm also trying to look into any of the others as well. I love the Eastern's but being endangered they're a rare commodity. I'll check the URL out you provided and hopefully find out some more information on these guys. I'm usually a boid person but I'm in the market for a colubrid that can match the boid's in size but outdo them in temperment.
