ornate turtle "rescued"

Ninja_Tortoise Jul 30, 2003 05:01 PM

ok, i just bought a female ornate box turtle, who was in conditions that were, well, we'll say, less than favorable. there is 59.99 written in magic marker on her belly, a small patch of shell chipped off on her back. it's not infected or anything, but is there anything i can do to help her heal faster? i know it's a she cuz she laid an egg in her tank at the pet shop.
if she lays in my enclosure, is there a chance it'll hatch? should i leave it, or pull it out and incubate?

does she need any vitamin supplements? i've had one of these box turtles before, but i was a kid, so i am going to do ore research. she is in a kiddy pool on an enclosed porch with a basking lamp and everything, so her set-up is fine. i just want to make her as comfortable as possible. any help would be appreciated
thanks,
ME

Here's a great site with very comprehensive information - www.boxturtlesite.org. You may want to take her to a vet for a checkup - most pet shop turtles are not in the best of health and may have parasites. Good luck!

Since this is a wild-caught turtle, there is a good chance that any eggs she lays will be fertile up to a few years from your purchase. Go ahead and incubate just in case, if you get any eggs.
