SICK BEARDIES!!!!!!

ktmartin May 06, 2006 09:06 AM

about a week ago, i noticed one of my males, who is in a tank all by himself, but is in the same room as the rest of my beardies, had two soft spots on his scull and looked skinny. i sent him to work with my wife (vet tech) and her boss said he was old and had liver failure, they put him to sleep. a week later two more have the same spots, they are around 3-4 years old, and just look bad, her boss is out of town and i dont know any other reptile vet in cincy that i trust...she called him and he told me that there must be a bacteria in the play sand that i use for substrate. so i quarantined the ones that look sick, emptied all the tanks and cleaned everything. he also told her what medicine and the doses to give them. has anyone ever had this disease (?) or know what causes it??? please help!!

If multiple animals are sharing the same symptoms, then it could either be a pathogen of some sort, or por husandry practices. To rule out husbandry practices, make sure the beardies get prper amounts of calcium vitamin D3, and the like. Also, make sure that their humidity and temperatures are in the proper ranges. Mke sure they are getting exposure to ntural sunlight, or at least a 8% or higher UVB rated reptile UV bulb, at least 12 hours a day. Depending on the age of your animal, kidney falure could most likely be attributed to too much protien in the diet - 3 or 4 yo beardies should be eating ALOT of veggies (lettuce does not count!). My 3 yo pair's diet consists of about 75-85 % veggies. I'v used playsand as a substrate for beardies for years, but never had a problem with bacteria. If the humidity of the enclosure is too high, or the sand sat somewhere damp, that could be an issue. Spread about a half inch layer on a cookie sheet and bake in the oven for 2-3 hours to disinfect it. This should knock out most bacteria, with the exception fo those that can form endospores. Good luck - btw, search for a vet on the www.AVMA.org.
