Eastern Shore Virginia

marksherps May 06, 2006 03:55 PM

I've been snake hunting here on the eastern shore at my grand parents farm for the past 40 years. Today me and my girlfriend decided to go looking around and a couple miles from the farm in the middle of the road at 11 am was this gorgeous large male king! I've never seen a king snake down here and didn't think I would ever find one here. He's right about 60 inches and looks awesome, other than a couple scars. Truely a rare find for this area!

That's a great looking king! Congratulations, they are probably a bit more abundant than you think, keep looking!

Thanks Todd I appreciate it! The local herp books here say they are uncommon for this area but I'll be looking! I found tons of water snakes in the same area and thought it would be a good spot to find a king.

Beautiful king and great find! I'd bet about 10 sheets of well placed roofing tin on grandpa's farm would produce a mate for him before the year is out.

Did ya keep him ? Plan on finding a mate for him ? Hopefully you do as he looks like he would sire some fine young. Thanks for the use of the pic for my site as well !

No problem Keith! I released him that night and it just about killed me to see him go. But if I find more in the area I will definitely hold on to them. After seeing nothing but black racers and water snakes here my whole life it was really strange seeing such a big beautiful snake!
