Quick question

faust16 May 06, 2006 05:00 PM

Just bought my first baby female veiled, and have a small question. She seems to be spening all of her time on a naked vine i have running through the entire cage. Thers no foliage on this vine, but it is right below the heat lamp. She's eating fine, but getting her to drink is becoming a problem. I have a fountain in the cage, and 2 live plants that collect loads of water on their leaves, only problem is she's nowhere near these sources and i'm becoming concerned about dehydration. Any advice?

Also, she seems to look at the foliage and such, and it occurred to me that she feels trapped? She just can't get to water and im worried.
Cheers,
Faust

I finally got her out of the area, she spent some time on the fountain, and seemed to enjoy not being trapped in the heat. I also sprayed her ficus plant while she was in it. She didnt mind it it seemed, however, she was staring at a big globule of water, nailed it with her tongue, and then caught the leaf. She then ate the leaf's stem. She's prolly 2-3 inches nose to vent, is that normal for a veilid so young?

couple of tips..ditch the fountain. before she gets to the point of being so desperate to drink from it, it will be too late. You need to mist a couple of times a day. Veileds take longer, in my experience, to drink. They need much more time to realize whats going on you will probably need to mist for close to 5 min. And I also have found that they will not drink until you are done spraying...atleast with my veileds. Perhaps you should give us a rundown of your set up and possibly some pictures.

Babies...how fun and how nerve racking! Misting either with a spray bottle or misting device is the best. I mist Squig 2 times per day, with warm water, then hide to make sure he drinks. He is about 6-7 months now and loves to laps the leaves, but doesn't appreciate the audience. He spends alot of time under his light (40 watt regular bulb). I have several perches for him so that he can choose his temp.

The folks here are great! I have learned alot about husbandry from the best!

Good luck and hope this helps!

Kris

Aye, since then i've added more leaves and branches for her to get to her little basking area. She's drinking, eating, and moving around, gorgeous little girl . Also whenever she see's me coming and begin the first spray, she crawls along to the base of where a Ficus and an umbrella plant meet and let's the running water fall on her, lapping it up as well.

Thanks for all the help,
Faust
