Kinyonga & Eve...

lele May 06, 2006 05:48 PM

I think Uta/Ana is ready! I put her in her setup last night b/c she was scratching the dry sand but took her out this morning. Well, she began scratching again so I put her in around noon. I made an indentation in the sand and just now checked her "delivery room." I took off the bark and she has dug all the way to the bottom of the tank! I'll try to include the pics in this post but if they don't work, look at the last 4 at me webshots link below

Ana's delivery room!

delivery room set up will work well lele especially with the hunk of bark over the tunnel. Works well, like I told ya as far as having some sort of removable lid (for peeking) LOL

Hope she does well. Let us know. Shes a real pretty girl, and has a very handsome hubby too

Had asked me WHY I remove the mommy before taking the eggs. Only because I'm a softie and feel very badly taking them, while they are watching, after they just went through so much.

Seems quite mean, and I'm sure it must be stressful as my female collareds continue to kick more sand on their nest for a week or so after laying to keep the eggs hidden.
Little do they know the eggs are not even in the pile they are protecting. But I try hard to take the best care of their eggs for them

So thats why I remove Mom for a few minutes while I collect the eggs then pile the sand back the way she had it and return her.

...but I sort of figured it was something like that. Her delivery room is a 2.5 tank so I will actually be placing her back in the community tank with Stan once eggs are laid. I have been emailing with Gary Ferguson b/c he used to study them and he said "Utas are very sensitive to cage moisture and will succumb to respiratory fungus if any part of their cage is continuously moist" That is why I made a separate place for her. I know she will retain sperm and could lay again at anytime, so I am not sure how I will handle that. It would be neat if I could make a little hallway b/t 2 tanks and have an egg laying chamber like they do for birds! lol! I still can't believe I am actually breeding!! Yikes!

Btw, if you are wondering about their names...Uta stansburiana is the Latin and since my girls always end in "a"...think you can figure it out. I might try to do better than "Stan" for him, he's deserves a more befitting name

I was cleaning Porky and Petunia's cage today and found a lone little egg the size of a small jelly bean. I felt bad for disturbing it, BUT it took it out anyway and I'll try to see if I can hatch it out... It looks good.

Congrats Lele and good luck with your little momma

Eve, you are the sweetest person I know with a huge heart!!

Here's a pic of proud papa

Your right, LOL geesh, I know each and every one of my own of course but yep, gottcha on hte getting everybody screwed up when ya go to yell out a name. Hhehehehhee

I got 3 more members of the household to name last week. I put them on the uroplatus forum as off topic, but they are from madagascar so I figured it would be appropriate. They are cute, and very timid, should be real sweet like collareds with some handling.

Madagascar collared iguanids, in order Zuka , Janga, and Jumba
