discolored tail, any ideas? (long)

MdngtRain May 06, 2006 07:06 PM

I noticed yesterday that my smaller gecko (Harley) has some grey on his tail. This is def. a new thing, as it was not there 2 weeks ago. He had pretty good use of his tail & a decent grip with it. The only thing that seems wrong is that parts of it are going grey. It's a light grey, much like the color of a sick chameleon (only reason I say this is b/c I had a cham who lost much of his tail to infection, and it had been the same splotchy grey). I took him to the vet, but unfortunately, my vet has very little experience with cresteds (mostly ig's & chams & ball pythons). Also, Harley is not eating well. This leads to the suspiscion of systemic infection of some sort. I can't get a fecal test done b/c he hasn't really pooped lately (I'd say last week or so). Appetite has also gone down drastically in the past month.

As for his basics: 36gal tupperware container w/coco fiber substrate & 3 live plants (re-planted). Temps run about 68 at night & 71 during the day (winter temps, I have no lighting on this cage, but the temps remain the same as the cage with the lighting). The humidity fluctuates fron about 40% (about 60% with the more humid weather lately) during the day & 70% after misting & at night (cage covered. Humidity at night again higher with the wet weather). He's fed CGD every other day (placed in several spots so he can find it about everywhere he looks, but still never touched, so I don't switch it out every night) with 1/8 of a teaspoon of babyfood mixed in once a week. Also offered crix once a week, but ignores those.

His activity seems fine, tho I don't really see much of his night. He always is in a different position when I look in on him. He has def. grown since I've gotten him, but I'm not sure of the exact increase. At the vet, he weighed 10g. He looks very skinny though.
Any suggestions or ideas will be greatly appreciated. The vet suggested a UVB light, so I will try that. I will also be adding a light to help raise the ambient temps to a more "gecko comfy" summer temp (around 80 day-time).

I upped the temps a bit (still only low 70's), but I need to get another ceramic-socket dome to be able to bring them up to the temps I need (this will happen soon). Harley's eating at least a bit (noticed he took some CGD from one of his dishes), but he still won't touch the crix.
Any ideas ont he tail issue would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!

From the picture, I'd say the tail color is normal. A lot of cresties have tails with very light coloring on top. Since your gecko is young (small), he may just be developing his adult coloration. The UVB light isn't necessary; it may be useful as a heat source but cresties don't need UV light. Sorry replies were not forthcoming to your questions; I hope Harley is all right now.
