Help-carrot tail viper gecko breeding?s

crazyreptilelady May 07, 2006 01:09 PM

So I picked up 4 sexually mature carrot tail viper geckos in January. They are housed together. I have been finding eggs intermittently starting in late February. I have incubated the eggs at 82F but have not had much luck. Out of 6 eggs, one was infertile, 3 hatched but one hatchling died within 12 hrs, a second hatchling died yesterday after a week and a day and the final hatchling is thriving and getting very big after 1 month. The 5th egg went bad and the sixth egg is still in the incubator. Has anyone breeding had high mortality rates?

And until today all adults seemed to be doing fine. Good size and healthy. But then I found one of my females dead. Healthy size. Good set-up. They always have calcium. And the other female is huge. Anybody with experience with these guys - I would really appreciate some advice. It has been a draining 2 days. Help!

In our experiences Viper tails have been like little tanks...Very hardy. I lost both of my adult females last year, but bought them as huge adults that were obviously older animals. The babies are what's worrying me in your case...Out of about 60 or so last year we may have lost 5 total. How are you housing the babies? Truly we don't have water dishes in with either babies, or the adults, just humid hides. I have heard of people losing babies due to humidity problems. These guys are very productive, keep your head up, and you'll have more than you'll know what to do with! If you have other specific questions, go ahead and email me, as I don't get to the KS forums that much anymore!
