my Thayeri & my 2 Hybrids/Intergrades

OWLVIPER May 07, 2006 01:42 PM

I purchased an '05 "Leonis" phase female Thayeri in Feb. here at Phoenix herp expo & was wanting a male to breed with her.In the last few months searched for 1 on net & also looked for more images/info on these .Then I started really wanting a Mtn.king (possible breeder for my Thayeri) & was interested in finding so many hybrid kings & "other" hybrid snakes.....Went to a herp show in Tempe,AZ & came across these 2 "intergrade" Kings male & female pair.
Was told they are intergrades of 4 kinds:Pyro,Thayeri,Mex-mex & Ruthveni.I have posted in another forum & was ignored,so i have noticed in here there are more of these kinds of snakes accepted. Are there any more of you people in here that like these?
And anyone producing them & if so how is this kind of "mixing" possible?? any info would be good since they are not "Purebreeds" or whatever the problem with my prior forum inquiry(not in here) is/was .......

I believe thayeri and ruthveni naturally intergrade at some point.

"Was told they are intergrades of 4 kinds:Pyro,Thayeri,Mex-mex & Ruthveni."

An intergrade is a natural cross between two sub-species of the same species. Thayeri and Mex-Mex are the same species (l. mexicana) and may possibly intergrade in the wild.

Pyros (l. pyromelana), and Ruthveni (l. ruthveni) are different species. A cross between species is a hybrid. Your "4 way intergrades" really hybrids of 3 different species. You may find a few folks interested in looking on this forum, but you'd find more interest on the hybrid forum.

I don't know if you should assume that animals sold to you as hybrids or intergrades are pure. The bottom two clearly show the influence of pyromelana. I have seen pyro/thayeri crosses that almost look like pure thayeri, they were being sold in a pet store as "Mexican Mtn. Kings", but the clerk admitted they were pyro X thayeri. If you are interested in buying pure, buy only from people that care about purity, and only raise pure animals. If you dont care about purity, don't call your snakes what they're not.

is that a couple of those look more like pure Thayeri than a couple (I stress a couple) of the supposed pure Thayeri pics I have seen posted here lately. If they are hybrids, they could easily end up being bred as Thayeri by an unsuspecting person. Why do people keep doing this? Pure Thayeri are incredible enough without adding a bunch of unnecessary unknowns. Pure Thayeri offer plenty of selective breeding challenges for those that like something to occupy their creative thoughts (like me). That's one of the reasons I have Thayeri.
