First Snakes - Emory Rats

ScottKennedy May 07, 2006 03:08 PM

Hello, I am new to the forum. I just got two female het for amel Emory Rat Snakes about three weeks ago. I was going to get a corn, but I live in Georgia (it is illegal to possess native species here regardless of morph or origin). I am going to try to find an amel male and breed them next year.

These were 2005 hatchlings and are about 20-21" long.

Those are some nice looking emoryi there you guys. Great Plains rats and also Southwestern rats (meahllmorum) make great pets too, along with corn snakes. Many more people are starting to keep these interesting and pretty snakes. There's lots of variety too. I keep two groups, one Western (or intermontana) Emory's, and one Southwestern rats. The pic below is of a Western, or "intermontana", emoryi.

Emory's ratsnakes have been crossed with corn snakes too, of course. I'm wondering if the crosses, like creamsicles or cinnamons, are banned by GA law? Maybe, because they have varying amts. of corn in them, they are. I'm attempting to cross one of my Western Emory's with an albino corn. I think the offspring will be very interesting and keep the albino gene going for me.

One of these days I might get into some regular emoryi too. Good luck with yours.

Thanks to both of you. I like these snakes a lot, too, and am looking forward to trying my hand at breeding. There's something about the contrasty earth tone colors that I find attractive (even over some of the exotic corn morphs). I am not sure how cross breeds would be interpreted by GA law, but I'm not going to go there.

In terms of temperment they seem a lot like what folks say about corns. I let both snakes alone for a few weeks and have been handling them gently for the last several days. Except for a small initial nip by both, I haven't had any issues since (no musking either). They also appear to have quite an appetite and are eating f/t readily! I think that they'd eat every day (if I let them).

I like brown tones also. Good luck with those guys and keep us posted on their progress.

Hey guys, those are some real nice looking snakes. Emoryi are one of the most common snakes where i live, so i see them all the time, but they always have scars. I finnaly found a beautiful scarless emoryi this year. Pushing 5 feet in length. I actually did the nono and brought the snake home. He is a great pet and hasnt bit me once, nor musked. They are beautiful, so good luck breeding, I hear they breed readily.

Where do you live? It seems the ones along the coast of TX get pretty big. Do you have a photo of that monster? I think 50+ inches is really pushing it.

Sorry, I dont have a digital cam, but I am in Kansas and I just stretched him out next to the tape measure and he is 54.7 inches long. About 1.5 inches around. Biggest one I have ever seen, and not a scar on him. I have found one in the past that was just over 4 feet, and that was the biggest, till this year.

That's ok. That's a really big speciman for Kansas. Thanks for the info, which I can really use.
