roach question

rat_wrangler May 07, 2006 04:00 PM

I am going to start breeding my own mealworms and roaches (mostly because i'm fed up with crickets) and i was wondering what type of roach would be best for leopard geckos and ackies. I would prefer to use something that can't easily escape because my family isn't as tolerent of loose insects as i am. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The majority of the folk are going with the B. dubia as they are easy to keep and breed, plus a pretty mellow species. They do not climb and animals do love them.

I keep Eublaberus Distanti. Mostly because I can get right up the road from Bert Langerwerf at Agama International, he literally has a barn full of them. They don't climb or fly. I keep them in the biggest rubber maids I could find, 50 gallons I believe, with somewhat deep fine mulchy substrate, Bed-a-beast like. I keep them out in my garage most of the year. The advatage of keeping them in mulch rather than the usual egg carton things is that our native roached won't breed in it. I've heard of native roaches completely exterminating a colony of hissers.

The Distanti breed and grow more than enough for me to feed all my lizards and have a constant supply of roaches.
