How often can Reptomin be fed?

EasternLvrs10 May 08, 2006 08:12 PM

How often can Reptomin be fed to box turtles? There is one kind for aquatics and another kind supposedly made especially for box turtles, but I seem to recall a few years back on this forum people just used the kind for aquatics. I also noticed when I read the ingredients for the one for box turtles, that it seemed to be mostly fruit.

So which one is better?

Also, any other commercially available box turtle food recomendations would be appreciated! =)

Thanks
Bethany

I've offered it once a week to once every other week as a supplement, my largest and most recently aquired female absolutely loves the stuff and will practically stand up on her hind legs for it, I feed the aquatic pellet product - moist- , never tried the box turtle product but I guess you could offer both or offer one, one week then the other the next week - as a supplement, just make sure you offer a good variety along with the reptomin.

I recall someone stating that they had raised box turtles to adulthood soley on a diet of trout chow which is basically the same as reptomin. My yearling loves reptomin floating food sticks(fishmeal) in his water dish but he ignores the Rep Cal box turtle food(fruity).Young box turtles tend to favor meat over fruits or veggies but I offer both at every feeding.

in some cases reptomin is the only thing some hatchlings will take, even prefering it over live foods.

My box turtles won't eat pellets of any kind. A couple of weeks ago I ordered a sample of Nasco's Turtle Brittle because the caption read it's a food recommended & used by the Atlanta Zoo & is good for aquatic & box turtles.
I got just a small sample and my very picky painted turtle who won't try anything new right off the bat did try this & loved it right away. The box turtles all refused it... as I expected.
A friend of mine with an Eastern box who's very picky liked it though.
My only problem with it so far is that I can't seem to find a list of ingredients so I kind of hesitate to use it until I know exactly what's in it.
I also recently tried some Jurrassi turtle food because they claim there is no soy in the food because as the Tortoise Trust claims soy can interfere with calcium absorption.
Mr. Picky liked that too.
That's a couple of brands for you to look into. The rest of the pellet brands I've tried over the years are sitting here collecting dust.. or get ground up into feeder insect food.
Good luck with feeding!
