125 gallon tank question?????

reptileforest May 09, 2006 10:59 AM

Hello folks,
this is out of forum question, but:

Do any of you know where to get a cheap cover/top for my 125 gallon tank. When I bought the tank, it didn't come with the top. Now I am trying to find one and am having no luck online. Any web sites would help. Thanks

if this tank is for a snake how bout take the time to go buy the proper enclosure. Glass tanks unless made with the tops that slide in and out are not even close to being appropriate for snakes, much less a burmese. For the price of a 125 gallon tank you could buy a very nice enclosure that is appropriate. now if it is for fish any pet store can supply you with glass tops for the tank.

Make your own top. Jus get some nice 1x2 boards and make a tight fitting rectangular frame that fits snugly over the top and cover one part of it with 1/4 inch melamine board and the other with 1/4 inch hardware cloth and you're in business.

Though, like the other poster that replied above (Josh) my first bit of advice, if you could afford it, is to get a proper reptile enclosure. Even if you have to construct it yourself over time (cheap) or buy an expensive prefab one from a reputable cage manufacturer. Glass tanks can break and the snake can be cut or killed by broken glass. Plus, if you are suggesting this for a burm,.. when they get big they can simply flex their bodies and break out even 1/4 inch tempered glass.

Just some thoughts to ponder.

So True

I've seen a Burm in a glass tank that was to small and he broke it, this is a burm that someone also took to the pet store, because it was "to big" and "they could not afford to house it"

so if its for a Burm i hope its for a baby Burm, and you plan on building one or buying an extremly large one.

I am hoping this "cheap" cover is for tree frogs and not large constrictors; if it is for a large snake, read the story a few posts below; you'll be one of them in due time.

I use www.thatpetplace.com. I made the same purchase from them just last year. As mentioned, use the cover responsibly and buy the cover clips if appropriate.

please promise me that you will not cover the tank with plywood and bricks/weights to hold it down.

Thanks to those who helped with my actual question. As i stated in my first post, "This is out of forum question." burmese python forum is usually more populated with people, i thought i would ask here.
My 125 gallon tank houses a baby american gator.
Thanks again

in that case if you can't get one, your local pet store may sell them, i've seen them at petsmart before.

They don't lock-if kids are or might be in the house, kids can be sneaky right? One might sneak to where the gator tank is(unless the room is kept locked then less likely) and end up with hands in the tank getting bitten-saw it almost happen in a pet store a few years ago with a spectacled caiman. Sure, it's not always possible to get a locking top, but if possible I think it would be worth the money.
