how do chameleons die?

tanyacska May 09, 2006 03:07 PM

not trying to be morbid, i'm just curious. i think the lifespan for a female veiled is 5-8 years (pls correct me if i'm wrong) and mine is getting on in her years. i'm just wondering what a "natural death" for a healthy chameleon is like. or do most get ill in old-age and put to sleep by a vet? what am i in for, eventually? thanks.

If your female veiled is within that age range, then you have done a good job with her!

There are many ways that they die. If you both are lucky, you will go to check on her one day and she will be laying dead on the floor of the cage never having shown any signs of old age. I have had quite a few go this way.

I have had some that just simply slow down and become more frail as time passes and eventually just die.

More often than that, they develop some sort of health issue in their old age that will put you in the position of having to decide when or if its best to have her put down.

As long as the quality of life for her is still good, enjoy her!
