Metabolic bone disease

Lenny May 09, 2006 04:08 PM

I just brought my ornate horned frog into the vet. He took xrays. It turns out that he has severe mbd. I have been force feeding the frog pureed crickets with rep-cal. What experience have others had with this disease? Have there ever been any cures? Any input is appreciated.

I looked and pacmans don't get MBD, it inhances their color and makes them more active... but they don't get MBD. Are yous sure you have a pacman? Maybe he is just deformed from berth.

That is what the vet told me. MDB.

I don't know where you were looking but horned frogs do get MBD. Check out Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry, Krieger Press for some discussion on it.

MBD as a term is confusing as there are multiple different conditions that are called MBD (Metabolic Bone Disease). This can result from insufficient calcium, an improper calcium to phosphorus ratio, or a improper ratio of vitamin A to D3. (these are some of the most common causes of MBD).

While you can correct the condition with the support of a vet, any deformities that have occured will remain.
