Sick beardie, please help

yellowbirdenator May 09, 2006 08:53 PM

Hello all, I am new to the site...I posted a message yesterday but am not sure where it ended up so sorry if i post this twice. I have a sick beardie, 2 years old, diagnosed with mouth rot, which happened after he obtained some snout damage. He was prescribed a 14 day course of Baytril and daily swabbings with betadine. However, when he went on the Baytril he was still eating at will and he just had really red gums and palate. Now hes not eating willingly, and the gums don't seem to be getting much better, but hes done his antibiotics on thursday. Has anyone had a beardie on this stuff, and is this normal? Also, I am finding it really difficult to get into his mouth to swab, so does anyone have any tips for doing this? Anything you can help with would be wonderful. Also does anyone know if I can get rid of this or if it will cause my beardie to die??
Thanks in advance,
Sarah

It is not uncommon for dragons to go off food when being treated with antibiotics. They need to be kept very well hydrated and offering a probiotic helps get their appetite back. In a pinch, non fat, unsweetened fruit yogurt works well. There is a probiotic for reptiles who's name I can't remember right now, something like achylophis (your vet should know what probiotics are). Live bacteria culture yogurt works just as well.

If you are concerned the mouth rot is still present, take him to your vet. He may give another run of antibiotics to clear it completely.

Also make sure all his husbandry requirements are optimal as well. Slightly higher temps than normal may hope get him feeling better faster.

Hi
achidophulus is the name.
he should go to a healthstore for humans where you can buy vitamines.
then asked for probiotics in capsules ,then 1 capsule on a 1/2 cup of water for 1 week long wil help the digestion work again.

Hi
what the other lady already told is the thing why he not eat.
the antibiotics kill also the good bactria which he need to digest his food.
you need to replace it.
thats the key.
you can also try out kaytee birdfood.
for hatchling mawcaws its a complete food with the good bacterie acidopilus also in it .
its for mawcaws who just come out eggs its very light digestable.
give 1 cc for every 100 gram youre beardie weight.
so 300 gram beardie 3 cc of the food wil help.
in a exotic birdshop you can get it there.
