New hatchling rack idea

zach_whitman May 09, 2006 11:55 PM

Actually its an old idea just newly applied to hatchling racks. Long skinny boxes!!!!

I just finished building the new hatchling racks I am going to be using this year. Tell me what you think.

Each tub is 12 long, 3 wide, and 2 high. There is a groove in the along the back of each shelf housing a heat rope. Thats right BELLY HEAT! they maintain about a 10 - 16 degree gradient.

Holds 20 hatchlings in just over one cubic foot!

I think you are definatly on the right track. I have had an idea for quite some time. My idea is the actual rack part only needs to be 4" deep to hold the box! The boxes would hang out like the ones you pulled out. Better air flow and a better heat gradient. You just heat the 4inches of rack and the part hanging out and they can thermal regulate better.

On my version the rack would have to be anchored or a heavy base.

By the way where did you get those awsome containers?

That is an interesting idea. It would really reduce weight and materials needed. However, the boxes would have to be covered. I just finished drawing plans for a larger version of his cage to hold around 300 tubs. I wouldn't want them to be covered that would be a huge hassle. Also, these tubs are so small that I would be nervous that a slight bump would send them flying out of the rack!

The problems I have been having is that hatchling sub-ocs can squeeze through the top of most commercial hatchling racks. I actualy use those racks like that but the tubs are pushed in a bit more where about 6 inches hang out.

yeah i've had that problem as well with other racks. I made the gap between the top and the shelf pretty darn tight on these. I need to drill/melt air holes in all of them.

All of my racks are interchangeable with different sized tubs and one rack holds the same container in a lidless fassion and is interchangeable from rack to rack. I use plastic laminates they seem easier to clean.
