Rattlesnake-Python Hybrid?

greentara May 10, 2006 07:00 AM

Wasn't sure where to post this but figured that I'd try here. First of all this isn't a joke post, although it sounds like one

Yesterday I was in my local pet store buying Crickets for my Gecko. Large tattooed guy in front of me had a batch of feeder mice on the counter. Being a snake fanatic, I commented on the mice and asked him what he had? He proudly announced that he had a very rare Rattlesnake-Python hybrid that would only eat live prey. Hmmm? Said that she was quite a pig and ate 16 at one feeding! I asked him if he had thought of moving up to rats and he said he couldn't because her head was too small, apparently due to the Rattlesnake breeding. Also said that he coudn't handle the snake much because of her being part Rattlesnake. I never did get to ask him if this hybrid was venomous etc and thought the whole encounter pretty odd.

I did a Google search, looked around here and did see some stuff on hybrids but nothng like the one he claims to own. Is this even possible? I know they are two completely different classes of snakes so I'm doubtful but don't know much about genetics-snake biology etc. I'm wondering if he got ripped off big time? He did say she came from some lab but that was about it. I'm really, really curious and was thinking of calling my local herp society{CT} but thought I'd try here first because I love reading this forum. Any feedback would be great. I don't own venomous and never will but they fascinate me and I'm always interested in learning more. Thanks Tara

don't buy any property from this guy!....especially if he's selling some oceanside condos in Arizona. Ah yes, idiots abound everywhere. If you want the 100-page abstract on why this is biologically impossible, feel free to email.

LOL Rob! Think I'll pass on the abstract.... Like I said I'm not exactly well versed in snake bio but the whole thing did sound extremely ridiculous. I can't imagine anyone being that dumb but like Tom Waits said in one his songs, "There's a sucker born every minute and you just happened to come along at the right time." Obviously he was talking about tattooed guy. I do wonder how much he paid for his "hybrid?" Thanks for answering my post. I was worried people would think it was a fake but I don't think i could make up anything this absurd if I tried. Thanks again, Tara

Yes they DO have tiny heads so they have to eat mice (this particular individual took 19 last meal).

I have very thin eggs incubating right now

And if you were wondering if it is venomous or non-venomous...

they are all born venomoid

SEE! I knew it could happen!

I'm thinking 50/50 chance... Either he was a total moron...or he thought you were, and he's in a bar right now telling his friends about the girl at the pet shop that he thinks believed that story...

While I appreciate the humor in it, I don't normally mess with people that way because too many would honestly believe it, but I happen to know a "big tatoo guy" that loves pulling stuff like that... (Although even he would normally let them in on the joke after a while.)

P.S. Either way, as you might have guessed, a rattlesnake big enough to eat 16 mice would probably be able to eat a medium rat anyway... The size of the head is not really the limiting factor.

i was at an educational day at the local nature center and brought a friend to help watch my table, hes known to be a bit of a clown. when i came back from a restroom break he had a smile that i knew meant he was up to something, when i asked him what he had done he told me he had just convinced a mom and kids that leopard geckos hunted in packs of 1000's and could take down wild buffalo! he still tells that one in bars, if he still had a snake id say it could be the same big guy with tattoos! lol

Maybe he was buying mice for his geckos?

Great comments and I love the photoshop job! Honestly, I don't think this guy was goofing on me. He and his buddy were to put it kindly, "just a bit slow." Well... actually exceedingly slow. There just wasn't enough combined intelligence there to craft any kind of attempt at leading someone on. I'm pretty good at reading people and I think he got sold an very expensive joke, THAT HE DOES NOT GET. As for the guy who called me a girl, I love you, but I'm far from that. Actually I'm a mid 40s Environmental engineer and part time poker player{made the money in Stud and Razz at the WSOP last year}
I love reptiles and enjoy reading this board so figured I'd ask, expecting a hell of a lot more ridicule for my question, then I actually received. I was pretty sure the guy was nuts but there was this tiny bit of doubt so I figured I got to the experts. I had a blast, thanks, tara

because if anybody succefully did that you would here about it and it would be worth 100,000 and anyone with a snake worth that much would not want to depend on a pet store. he was probably being a smart ass, just my 2 cents
