Thats great. My female just had the first shed of the year and was introduced to the male yesterday and they would have nothing to do with each other. The male is only half the size of the female so mayble he was intimidated.Any thoughts on this? What do you think Dusty?
Did you put her in his cage? I did that with mine, as I had been told that helps...so he isn't inimidated I guess. I would give it a bit, then separate them after a week and reintroduce. I'm sure you prolly know that, but just in case. Are yours normals? This pair is, don't think they are het for anything. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
John
Yes,I put her to him.He is a normal and she is blonde. Will try again tonight.
They are late breeders. Keep trying, but should be after second shed when they finally like each other.

It's just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus. All year long the grasshopper stored up acorns for winter, while the octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched tv. And then the winter came, and the grasshopper died, and the octopus stole all his acorns, and he got a race car. Is any of this sinking in?
Kinda like a potato and a rug. One thing they both have in common. They both cannot ride a bike!

I had a blond suboc that I would take out to the desert and order her to "go get bred".
I would let her go.
I would return the next night, and every time she would be there waiting for me but with a loaf of pumpernickle.

You are lucky every time I tried that I had to go looking for her. Never failed, I always found her raiding the desert carrotpatch.

Males usually pursue the females after the second or third sheds. I would guess that is why they didn't lock up yet.
I don't know if size should matter too much. Subocs are kind've aggressive breeders, so if the male isn't large enough to bite her neck and copulate at the other end at the same time, then that may (or may not) be a problem.
The standard initial breeding age for captive TPRS's is 3 years for males and 4 for females. Though I know some people start them around 2 or 3. As I am sure you already know, they don't mature as fast as corns.
Good luck with them! Maybe he'll be successful, although it could be like a 12 year old asking out an 18 year old supermodel. LOL
Later!

According to Dick Bartlett, Craig McIntire revealed that the females were only receptive to mating for a short period of time between June 18th and June 30. I have found that to be true. I had breeding on the 20th and 22nd of June in previous years.

-----
Guess mine didn't read that one...heh. I had been read late May/June. They are breeding, so I am gonna keep em at it till they show no interest. Given the June timeframe, do you think sperm, etc. are still viable? Never thought of that.
John
Yeah as long as you got them cool enough during the winter (low 50's), and as long as they locked up they should be good to go. Dave Katz's animals breed early also, so it happens...and he typically has a 100% fertility rate. It generally depends on when you cool them and warm them back up.
populations. Late breeders, late hatches. With incubation of more than 3 months for this species but can go for shorter terms of time of a little over 2 months in ideal captive conditions. So by some of your observations and mine of the late June scenario breeding, that would make hatching in very late Aug. and or Sept. in which being down in the Trans-Pecos at those times the reason I have observe so many juvenile subocs. AND the flow of multiple numbers observed by me and others have remarked on the adults moving in masses due to breeding season of late June to July. But if you have been down in that time frame ( late June early July )of on the movement of suboc either on pavement or not, about 75% to 90% are males found. They are seeking the trails of laid down pre-breeding scent of females. This is also true of either second window or coming of breeding age crotalus down there. TRUE ?

Well Happy Breeding Day!
Man I tell you, I am really excited for this year. Subocs typically go after the female's second or third post-brumation shed, and one of my silver blonde females was in the blue and she cleared up yesterday, and I expect she will shed today sometime. And as soon as she does, I'm sticking her in with my albino male.
Both of my axanthic adult females are nice and thick and I am hoping for a couple of clutches of triple hets (aka het for snow and snow blonde among other things).
My triple hets are big hopefuls for this year too. I have 2.1 that I am putting together, and we are hoping for something cool like albino blonde, snow or snow blonde. And of coarse, an albino or two plus a normally patterned axanthic or two would be really nice.
Here is my albino male and the largest of my silver females. Sorry about the large pic size!
Good times!

Thanks for the info. on the 2nd or 3rd shed.I'll just keep pairing them up.By the way,I don't beleive a snow has benn produced yet right? You gotta keep us posted on that.Good stuff!

Yeah the "snow suboc" is a race between Craig Trumbower, Todd Smith and myself.
We all have adult triple hets, and this will be the first year Craig or I attempt to breed them. We have a 1/16 shot and subocs usually only lay 7 or 8 eggs, so you go figure...
Todd has produced one albino blonde with his triple or double hets. His are the European line.
Mine and Craig's are the Loma Alta/Hwy 277 line.
Good luck with your Bogey's! Let me know what they do.
